“Zakat Performance in the 2011 Program of Poverty eradication”

“Zakat funds managed through systematic and well-patterned empowerment program are proven to be effective in reducing the burdens of people living under the poverty line”

It was at least what we see from the study conducted by IMZ in 2011, to illustrate zakat distribution performance of 16 zakat management organizations in six areas, which are Jabodetabek, Padang Municipality, Yogyakarta Municipality, Surabaya, Samarinda and Balikpapan.

As a research and study institute that focuses on the poverty issues and the development of community empowerment models, IMZ conducted its annual research on April to October 2011. The research aimed at capturing the changes in the welfare of 10,806 zakat beneficiaries households managed by 16 zakat management organizations (OPZ). Using simple random sampling method, the research was conducted on 1,639 poor households as the sample, based on the poverty line determined by BPS.

This research once again affirmed empirical proof that zakat funds distribution by OPZ is effective in reducing poverty among mustahik by 21.1%. In the context of poverty depth, zakat distribution decreased poverty gap, which means that the average income gap between mustahik and the poverty line is lessened, from Rp 326,501.01 to Rp 318,846.15. Another positive implication of the zakat distribution by OPZ is that it successfully reduced poverty severity by 25 to 30 percent.

It is not unlikely then, that with their programs, zakat institutions in Indonesia were able to accelerate the time to exit for poor households to leave poverty line by 1.9 years. In the future, with its authority as zakat regulator, the government must intensify its management system of zakat and other social religious funds, to increase the impacts of zakat management performance in Indonesia.
